Be born again By Young mi Kim

A body as a place of transcendental experiences and its traces

Young-mi Kim has been not only working on canvas but also crossing over diverse genres through her objects, installations, films and performances works. In fact, a genre is not an important matter to the artist. This is because basically her painting is the result of her performance, her film is a record of it, and objects and installations are created in the process.

Kim does not even use a brush on her canvas works. Her canvas works are created with the results of actions throwing a broom or piece of fabric dipped in paint or hitting with them, which means that these abstract results of her practice came out after the similar process with action painting. In that sense, Jackson Pollack’s dripping in his action painting and Kim’s process have certain similarities; both of their practice is about unconsciousness rather than consciousness and inevitably has a time of deep immersion in the process. These are also the points that can be compared with certain of automatism in Dadaism or Surrealism.

The method of Kim’s practice is related to how the artist sees the world. The artist instinctively experiences the world that cannot be captured by one’s intellect or consciousness, and in order to express it, she has to exclude her consciousness as much as possible and furthermore needs a time of deep immersion paralleled to an unconscious state. Kim’s practice is like guiding to the world that cannot be experienced with intellectual judgments by going beyond the conscious world and crossing over the boundary of unconsciousness. This can be said as the result of religious experiences or the world of the original senses, experienced in an unconscious state.

The artist proposes “Born Again” for the title as well as the subject of the exhibition. There are groups of works hung under the sub-subjects on the walls of the exhibition space: ‘People’, ‘Sunset’, ‘Spark-tree’ and ‘Born Again’. Kim sequentially arranges them as time flows by composing a certain narrative from her viewpoint on the world and humans. Even though the exhibition place, composed of not only canvas works but also objects, installation and etc., is tidily put in order so that it almost looks solemn, traces in her works reveal how the artist was immersed once during the process of making them. The evidences of thrown, shaken and mixed paint are traces of moments when the artist had transcendental experiences beyond the genres or theoretical interpretation.

The results of her practice must be not just physical ‘things’ but ‘places’ where the artist has transcendental experiences beyond consciousness. This is because they are not just painting but records of ‘places’ where actions, revealed from the flow of immaterial consciousness, happen and the traces of them from the process of works instead. What the artist implies through ‘Born Again’ is related to transcendental experiences of humans that cannot be experienced in the world of rational consciousness. Therefore, her works cannot be said as something about the physical rebirth but qualitative or transcendental change if they are understood once. For example, the works do not allow audiences to enter the world that the artist experiences but tell a direction of the world that the artist suggests when audiences go closer to the context of the works.

Humans experience the world based on the material and visible worlds and make a decision from that experience. Kim is talking about the material and visible worlds in this exhibition. Although a gap between them seems to be not related each other, the artist seems to believe that both of the worlds can be experienced and expressed with a human body as they are experienced with a human body. Therefore, Kim tries to move her body and record traces of that movement, which means that the artist brings out her transcendental experiences to the visible world through her body where she has immaterial and invisible experiences and attempts to record them. In this way, a human body that can connect the two different worlds that seem to be impossible to connect becomes an important matter that the artist concentrates and an important medium leaving traces in the exhibition place. Perhaps the exhibition space itself can be a place where a transcendental experience is ‘born again’ if traces of her experiences are experienced by audiences beyond their consciousness.
